The WVOMHST 40-hour apprentice miner training provides new and inexperienced miners with essential classroom and hands-on instruction to meet the West Virginia Board of Coal Mine Health and Safety's requirements for a surface apprentice miner card. Topics include identifying surface mining machinery and hazards, practicing with safety and first-aid equipment, understanding state and federal laws, and preparing for the MSHA 5000-23 certificate for newly employed miners. The comprehensive five-day course consists of four days of instruction and hands-on work, followed by one day of review and testing.
The WVOMHST 80-hour apprentice miner training is a comprehensive course required to obtain a WV Underground Apprentice Miner card ("red hat"), combining classroom instruction and hands-on activities at the WV Training and Conference Center Mine Lab.
